Margaret Weis

Margaret Weis was born and raised in Independence, Missouri. She graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1970, with a BA in Creative Writing/American and English literature. She worked for Herald Publishing House in Independence, Missouri from 1970 to 1983, where she was Advertising Direction and editor for independence Press.

In 1983, Weis left Missouri to move to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, to take a job as book editor at TSR, Inc., producers of the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS role-playing game. At TSR, Weis became part of the DRAGONLANCE design team. Created by Tracy Hickman, the Dragonlance world has continued to intrigue fans of both the novel and the game for generations. 2004 was the twentieth anniversary of the DRAGONLANCE CHRONICLES, which has sold over twenty million copies world wide.

Weis is also the author/co-author of several other best-selling series, including DARKSWORD, ROSE OF THE PROHET, STAR OF THE GUARDIANS, THE DEATHGATE CYCLE, SOVEREIGN STONE, and her current seris with Tor Books, DRAGONVAARLD. Weis also continues to write for Dragonlance with the new series, DARK DISCIPLE. She and Hickman are returning to the characters of the Dragonlance Chronicles books with a new series titled, THE DARK CHRONICLES, with the first book, DRAGONS OF THE DWARVEN DEPTHS, due out in 2006.

Weis is owner of Sovereign Press, the publisher of the new DRAGONLANCE D20 RPG products licensed from Wizards of the Coast. She is also the owner of MARGARET WEIS PRODUCTIONS, LTD, publisher of the role-playing game based on the film, Serenity, written and directed by Joss Whedon.

Weis is currently writing a paranormal romance novel with her daughter, Elizabeth Baldwin, for HarperCollins.

Weis lives in a converted barn in southern Wisconsin with two border collies, Max, Tess, and a labrodor retriever, Sasha. Tess has three UKC Agility Titles, including Agility Champion. Max is learning flyball.

My favorite charity. Southeastern Wisconsin Herd Dog Rescue. They do really wonderful work. They deal with all herd dogs, such as collies, shelties, border collies, etc., rescue them from shelters where they would be put to sleep and try to find them good homes. My own dog, Tess, who has her UKC Agility Championship, came from there.

I was first introduced to Firefly through a pirated video of the pilot episode. First, let me say, that as an author, I am completely against pirated anythings. Creative people have a right to profit from their endeavors! However, being a Buffy fan and a science fiction fan, I had been eagerly looking forward to this new production, Firefly, from Joss Whedon for a very long time. When one of my friends bought this pirated video, I could not resist the temptation to watch it, especially since my friend kept going on and on about how wonderful the pilot episode was and what a great show this was going to be.

I watched the pilot and I was captivated. And I was so glad I had seen the pilot, since "Mei Yong Ma Duh Tse Gu Young" Fox went stupid and aired the pilot at the very end of the series! As a mea culpa, I bought and sent several copies of the complete DVD set to friends and family, including one to Tracy Hickman, who also became a huge fan.

My views on pirating haven't changed, but sometimes good does come from evil!:) Keep flying!
